In reviewing this comparison, I’m going to compare SEMRUSH VS AHREFS : Which SEO Tool IS BEST? by putting against each other – and help you figure out which of these major SEO tools meets your needs.

What are Ahrefs and SEMrush?

Ahrefs and SEMRush are two products that help you optimize your website for search engines.

They do this in many different ways, but the main thing they give you is information – information that you can use either:

Create new content that is likely to attract organic search traffic

Identify opportunities to create links for you from other sites

Change the technical aspects of your website so that it performs better in search results

For example, both tools provide you with keyword suggestions (based on the phrases you enter) that can be used as a basis for writing blog posts that are likely to perform well in search results.

They will also tell you how difficult it will be to rank for specific phrases.

They will help you identify websites that may be coming for a backlink.

And they allow you to do an “SEO audit” on your website to find out if you can make any technical improvements to it that will help you get better search results.

However, there is scratching the surface: there are many other features provided by Aherefs and Semrush that are designed to help you climb the search rankings. I will go through them in depth as we proceed through the review.

Let’s start with something called domain analysis.

Domain analysis

One of the most useful things you can do with Ahrafs and SEMrush is basic domain analysis – this means getting a simple overview of how a domain is typically performing from an SEO standpoint.

Generally, you either do domain analysis on your website – to see where SEO improvement can be made – or on a competitor, to see where they are in the search results (or to find ways to do so) How difficult it will be.

Carrying out domain analysis is straightforward in both tools – you simply enter a domain in an input box, and the key matrix is ​​quickly returned to you (in dashboard format).

Additionally, with Ahrefs, you access a list of the top pages of a domain. This is something for which you will have to pay a lot of extra in SEMrush (this data is provided only as part of SEMrush’s ‘Competitive Analysis’ add-on,

with a lot of extra features available on you per month The regular SEMrush plan costs $ 200. More on pricing later).

Both tools give you an estimate of the monthly traffic of the domain you are analyzing – it is important to note that the figures given here are estimates.

Based on my own (small-scale) personal testing – using sites for which I have access to traffic data – I have found that the estimates of aharefs are more accurate;

SEMrush, however, states its results slightly to indicate how accurate your estimate is (high, medium, or low).

The important thing to remember with any set of traffic statistics is that they should be used to identify trends (ie, the site is more popular than A B B and C) rather than taken as a full gospel has gone.

To this end, a good feature in SEMRush’s domain analysis is that you won’t find any direct alternative to its equivalent in Ahrefs: its ‘competitive position map.’ Against major competitors, to estimate how many keywords and monthly traffic estimates.

Overall, I’d give Ahrefs a bit of a win in the domain analysis department, mainly because all the information you need is in one place, and because the top page data is available out of the box – but SEMRush does a commendable job here as well .

Keyword Research Features:

  • Keyword research is usually about four things:
  • Indicates how many people are searching for a particular keyword
  • How difficult it is to rank on google for that keyword
  • Finding out who is already ranking on google for that keywords
  • Get help and suggestions from other people.

Both Ahrefs and SEMrush make it very easy for you to get all above listed information widley.

You simply enter a keyword in your respective keyword research tool (‘Keyword Explorer’ in Ahrefs, and ‘Keyword Overview’ in SEMRush), and you’ll get the information you need right away:

search volume, a keyword difficulty score, sites Who are currently ranking for it, and a list of related keywords.

The SEMRush keyword uses a percentage score to indicate difficulty – indicating higher difficulty with a higher percentage. Ahrem with Cemarus uses a score out of one hundred – a higher score indicates higher difficulty.

This means that you definitely get more ‘good grain’ information about keyword difficulty from SEMrush, (although I doubt it would be useful only in ultra-competitive niches).

Both SEMrush and Ahrefs allow you to create a list of keywords that you can refer to at any time of your choice (their “Keyword Manager” and “Keyword List” features, respectively).

So far, we’ve been talking about a similar feature set about keyword research. But both products have some good keyword-related features, others are not.

One thing I really like about Ereps’ approach to keyword difficulty scores is that it not only tells you how hard it will be to rank for a given keyword, it also tells you how many backlinks (other Links for you from sites) to appear on the first page of search results.

Additionally, Ahrefs not only show the amount of searches, but also the number of clicks that are generated (all users click on biological results – some click on ads, etc.).

Another area that Ahrefs has an edge over SEMrush in the Keyword Research Department includes search engines for which you can actually do research.

While SEMrush only provides data for Google searches, Ahrefs 9 allows keyword research for other search engines, including big hitters like Youtube, Yahoo and Amazon.

Now, in fact, the vast majority of searches are still performed on Google – 92% at the time of writing – if you need to do keyword research for other search engines, Ahrefs is a better bet.

If you are looking for a research tool to cover both organic search and PPC, then you may consider SEMRush to be a better option.

This is because it returns detailed CPC competition and distribution data with live advertisements. (You can also use it to complete PPC campaigns.)

Ahrefs show some information related to PPC, but it is limited to cost per click.

So overall, I’d probably win Ahrefs here, as it provides more useful information about organic search, and also allows you to do keyword research for a much broader search engine than SEMrush.

If PPC data is important to you, then SEMrush may be a more appropriate tool because it exposes both organic and PPC data.

Backlink analysis

How well a site performs in search results depends on how many backlinks – external sites associated with it – exist for the site in question.

With both Ahrefs and SEMRush, you can enter a domain name and see for it a list of all backlinks that each tool can find.

Based on data published by Ahrefs and SEMrush, SEMrush’s domain database is much larger than Ahrefs, with 163 million (at the time of writing) of 717 million domains Ahrefs.

Interestingly, in my own testing, it was found how many backlinks each tool gets based on the domain I was looking at.

For example, doing some simple domain analysis, I noticed that Ahrefs found more backlinks for than Sermarsh; But in contrast, SEMrush found more for than Ahrefs.

As I analyzed more domains, this pattern continued – sometimes the Ahrefs provided a more complete set of results, sometimes SEMRush did.

But on paper at least, it appears that SEMrush has a large database.

Backlink Report and Tools
In the context of backlink analysis itself, both Ahrefs and SEMrush give you a lot of useful information about backlinks that point to a domain, including breakdowns of:

  • Number of dofollow links with number of links vs nofollow
  • Country of origin of backlinks
  • Used anchor text for backlinks
  • New vs lost domains list
  • Add domain type (government, education etc.)

I generally like the way that SEMrush presents this information – a series of simple but attractive graphs exclude key statistics in a way that helps you easily digest them.

Additionally, both Ahrefs and SEMrush provide you with the ‘ect link intersect’ tool.

These allow you to compare a URL from your website against those related to competing websites, and give you an exportable list of websites that are currently linking to your competitors, but not to you.

SEMrush’s Link Intersect tool is slightly better than Ahref, as it allows you to compare your site’s backlink to 4 others, while Ahrefs 3 is limited compared to other websites. However, I find Ahref a bit easier to use.

There is a useful Ahrefs feature that is missing from SEMrush, but an ‘anchor reference’ – in Ahrefs, backlink reports allow you to use not only the anchor text to link to your site, but also the text around it.

Backlink Auditing and Building
SEMrush offers a pair of backlink-related features for which Ahrefs has no direct counterpart – and very useful features at that.

First, there is a ‘backlink auditing’ tool that identifies potential ‘toxic links’ (spam links that you may be penalized for in search results).

You can output a list of these links, which you can then upload to Google as a Google Disavow ‘file (it tells Google to ignore it).

Second, is a ‘backlink creation’ tool that analyzes your domain or URL and gives you a list of websites to target with a request for a new backlink.

The interesting thing about this feature is that you are not just working with a spreadsheet of URLs – you are working with a more interface CRM ‘style interface, each domain is listed as a prospect domain possibility’.

Pricing and value for money

Compared to other types of apps, Ahrefs and SEMrush are expensive.

While this makes sense, because you are not just paying for functionality, you are paying for access to a lot of data, including intelligence over your competitors.

SEMRush offers 3 price plans:

Aharefs comes in 4 varieties:

In terms of which value is better, it will not depend in small part on your business requirements (and budget).

That said, when trying to offer the most bang for the buck for their particle organization, there are some important things to zoom into.

Number of users

By default, all SEMrush plans come with only one user account. To add additional users to a plan you will have to pay an additional monthly fee ($ 70 per month ‘Pro’ user or $ 100 per month ‘Guru’ or ‘Business’ user).

I have used it many times and am happy with the response time – it was more or less immediate.

With SEMrush, you have to scroll to the site footer for contact details. But, on the plus side, relevant numbers and email addresses are displayed in a very prominent way – considering the need to search for knowledge bases before gaining access to them.

Both Ahrefs and Semrush allow you to try out the product before completing your monthly plans.

With Aheroffs, you’ll have to pay to do so – $ 7 will offer you a 7-day trial out of its ‘Lite’ or ‘Standard’ plans.

SEMrush, by contrast, allows you to try the product completely free. Typically, this test lasts for 7 days — but for a limited time, a 14-day free trial available using this link is required.

So which is better, Ahrefs or SEMrush?

Well, I would be very happy to use any of these tools for an SEO related project.

I really think you could say that either is ‘better’ than the other, but I think that, depending on the context in question, one of them is a better ‘fit’ for your business than the other. Can be proved.

So, taking everything into consideration, here are the reasons why you may wish to use one of these products.

Reasons to use Ahrefs on SEMrush

  • Aharefs are generally a little easier to use than Amerush, and give you more digestible, ‘at-a-glance’ information.
  • This gives you a specific estimate of how many backlinks are needed to rank for a particular keyword – SEMrush still introduced a similar feature.
  • You can use Ahrefs to do keyword research for various search engines – SEMrush only works with Google.
  • Broken links with Ahref are fairly easy to analyze.
  • Backlink auditing and broken link analysis is possible in Ahrefs without the need to set up a project ‘- this is important, as both Ahrefs and SEMrush limit the number of projects you can create.
  • You can view ‘top page’ data for domains outside of a domain with Ahrefs – SEMrush involves paying an additional monthly fee to access these metrics.
  • Its high-end plans allow you to have multiple users access your account; By default SEMrush limits user plans to 1 in all plans (with SEMrush, you have to pay more for additional seats, no matter what plan is considered).
  • The cheapest Ahrefs scheme is more generous than the SEMrush equivalent when it comes to the number of projects you can run simultaneously.
  • Customer support is easy to use in Ahrefs (but note that fewer channels are available).

Reasons to use SEMrush on Ahrefs

  • SEMrush provides a lot of data related to not only SEO, but PPC – if you want a tool that covers both areas, this is a much better option than Ahrefs.
  • SEMrush’s domain database is the largest of the two, based on data published by both products.
  • SEMRush is much better at identifying and outputting toxic backlinks and data links than Ahrefs.
  • Its site auditing features are more comprehensive and easy to use.
  • The CRM-style approach to outreach means that you can create great link building (and broken link building) campaigns without ever leaving the app.
